Brian Sager organized a conference on the boundaries between the animate
and inanimate, entitled “Emerging Technologies on the Edge of Life” and also
spoke on Feb. 21, 2004 at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center along
with Artist Orin Catts, MacArthur Fellow Erik Winfree and others at a
conference hosted by the San Francisco Exploratorium. The symposium
explored the mechanisms and processes that have historically defined the
animate and focus on emerging discoveries in areas such as organic
electronics, biocomputing, tissue engineering, nanotechnology, and
biologically-inspired art and materials design
